The regal shields variety was an instant hit. Oversized, tropical elephant ear leaves with a glossy black underside, what’s not to love?! This plant can be a little particular, but with proper conditions it will thrive. This foliage plant is perfect for spaces with high humidity, in a group of plants, and in a spot with high ceilings that will receive bright, indirect light.
Your Guide to Care
Care: Likes attention, moderate.
Light: Very bright, indirect light when indoors. Try placing it by a north or south facing window. If you are placing your plant outdoors, provide your regal shields with bright shade and/or filtered sun. It can withstand some direct morning sun as well, but in general keep this plant away from direct sun as it will scorch the leaves.
Water: Allow the soil to dry out about 1 to 2 inches on top between waterings. Try to keep the soil consistently moist, however not oversaturated. It also does not particularly like drying out, so it’s important to find a balance. You will be able to water less during winter months.
Temperature: 65 to 85F is their ideal temperature range. When temperatures drop below 60F make sure to bring your plant indoors.
Humidity: The alocasia regal shields loves humidity! Make sure to provide above average humidity conditions for your plant, especially if you are in a dry climate.
Feeding: Fertilize this plant every 4 weeks during growing season. On the day you fertilize make sure to water deeply in order to prevent salt buildup.
Bonus
Alocasia plants can get dramatic when they haven’t received water for a few days, but don’t worry! Thoroughly water (without overwatering of course), and give your plant some bright, indirect light and it should come back to life!
