Alocasia California Care Guide

A great, easy care plant to keep your home looking tropical is the Alocasia California

Why People Love This Plant

Featuring large elephant ear foliage leaves, the Alocasia California plant is a popular one due to its tropical vibes! It is slightly smaller than those related to it, however it is perfect as a houseplant (and still quite large)! It can take a bit to make this plant happy, so have patience and it will reward you!

Your Guide to Care

Care: Easy once established, however can be tricky initially.

Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal for the Alocasia California. It likes to receive a good amount of light, however this light should always be indirect, dappled, or filtered. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight as this will likely burn your plants leaves, leading to brown tips. Think rainforest floor lighting conditions. Leggy plants, slow growth, or smaller than usual leaves are a sign more light is needed.

Water: Water this plant when the top 1 to 2 inches of soil feels dry. This plant likes consistently moist soil, so make sure to keep the soil moist, however, be careful not to overwater or saturate the soil. In most cases, this will mean watering about once per week. Alocasia California does not do well with drought conditions.

Temperature: 65 to 80F is the ideal temperature range. This plant is sensitive to sudden temperature changes, so be sure to  avoid drafty doors and windows.

Humidity: The tropical Alocasia California loves humidity. If you are not in a very humid environment, make sure to provide some humidity by misting, a pebble tray, humidifier, or buy getting your plant some plant friends. If you notice browning, crispy leaves and your plant is not exposed to direct sunlight, this is an indicator that there is a lack of needed moisture.

Feeding:  Fertilize your plant every 4 weeks during spring and summer (warm months).

Bonus

Alocasia California plants can be dramatic when shipped. We don’t recommend these to ship  very long distances (5+ days). However, if you notice some yellow leaves upon arrival do not worry! Make sure to give your plant some water and light (familiar conditions) and it should come back to life.
