Bleeding Heart Plant Care Guide

The clerodendrum bleeding heart vine is a wonderful vining plant that will provide flowers from spring to fall!

Why People Love This Plant

Native to western Africa, cleodendrum bleeding heart is a popular sub tropical vine that will bloom profusely! This vine actually bears no relation to the other (dicentra) bleeding heart vine. This beloved plant blooms flowers that resemble heart shapes in red and white or purple and red flowers! Bonus, it is relatively pest resistant as well, aside from spider mites and mealybugs.

Your Guide to Care

Care: Relatively low maintenance.

Light: Bright indirect light or partial shade with pockets of sun. This plant can tolerate full sun as well, but make sure to keep it hydrated then! If growing indoors you will want to place it by a sunny window.

Water: This plant likes consistently moist (however not soggy) soil conditions. So, water frequently while being careful not to overwater the soil. Limit water over winter, where you are watering just enough so that the plant does not fully dry out. Do this until new growth starts.

Temperature: 65 to 85F is the bleeding heart vines preferred temperature range. Move indoors once temperatures drop below 45F as anything lower will cause damage to the plant.

Humidity: The clerodendrum bleeding heart vine likes humidity, so make sure to mist it or provide some, especially if humidity drops below 50%.

Feeding:  Give your plant a slow release fertilizer every two months during flowering season. A water soluble fertilizer once a month is also an option.

Bonus

Don’t worry too much when cooler temperatures come in and your plant sheds its leaves. New leaves will grow come spring!
