Macho Fern Care Guide

Low maintenance care macho fern plants are perfect to add a splash of green to your living space.

Why People Love This Plant

Macho ferns received their name because compared to other fern varieties such as boston’s and kimberly’s, they are, well, macho! Their fronds tend to be larger, and can grow three to four feet long! They can be grown indoors and outdoors and would do wonderfully on shaded/partially shaded porches and patios.

Your Guide to Care

Care: Low maintenance, however, not recommended for the underwaterer.

Light: A partially shaded to fully shaded situation, possibly where moring sun and afternoon shade is received is ideal if grown outdoors. If growing indoors, medium to bright indirect light is preferred. For both scenarios, try to avoid harsh, direct sunlight as it will burn the fronds.

Water: Water when the top inch of soil is dry to the touch. Macho ferns like moist soil, however be mindful not to oversaturate. These ferns are not drought tolerant, so do not allow soil to completely dry out. If indoors, expect to water once or twice a week.

Temperature: These ferns are native to areas like Florida and Hawaii, so they like warm, tropical weather. Make sure to move your macho fern inside when cooler temperatures approach as they are not frost-tolerant. They also like to be protected from strong winds.

Humidity: Macho ferns are native to swampy areas and thus, like humidity and moisture. Make sure to provide some if you are in a dry area or if growing indoors.

Feeding:  For mature plants, you can fertilize every 6 months or so.

Bonus

Extended drought will lead to some damage with this plant, do your best to keep the soil consistently moist.
