Flowering ruellia plants are native to Mexico (hence the name Mexican petunia), however these plants are also found in South America and the Caribbean. This flowering beauty produces violet colored flowers that are approximately 2″ wide with a tubular shape. A bonus about this plant, it’s deer resistant!

Your Guide to Care

Care: Under the right conditions, very low. Make sure to monitor growth and keep it under control.

Light: Ruellia plants prefer full sun, however they will also tolerate partial shade. The more sun, the more flowers will be produced. If your climate is brutally hot, you may want to give more shade.

Water: The best watering approach for the Mexican petunia is to keep the soil consistently moist. That said, this plant is actually able to withstand drought once established. While establishing make sure to water consistently. When cooler months come you can water less.

Temperature: Ruellia plants like warm temperatures, they do not like cold ones. As temperatures drop move your plant inside and be careful to keep it away from drafty areas.  

Humidity: This tropical plant like humidity and moisture!

Feeding: Not a very hungry plant, however you can fertilize during warmer months if you want.
