Why People Love This Plant
Used for countless purposes, in warm climates, especially Florida, you will see this plant everywhere! It is also somewhat salt tolerant, again making it a great fit for Florida. While not often, the variegated ginger plant will occasionally produce flowers that look like a strand of seashells! Hence an alternative name for this plant, shell ginger. Typically, the size of this plant will not exceed four feet, however it can get much larger than this in the wild.
Your Guide to Care
Care: Low maintenance.
Light: While the variegated ginger plant will tolerate a range of light conditions, a part sun situation would be ideal where it receives full sun, but with some afternoon shade to prevent leaves from burning. If growing in a cooler region, full sun may be best. Colors will be the most bold with more sunlight. If indoors, make sure to provide it with bright sunlight. We recommend a south facing window.
Water: It is best to keep the soil consistently moist, therefore water often but be mindful not to allow the soil to get soggy. It is moderately drought tolerant, however will do best with regular watering and moist soil.
Temperature: If you see temperatures below 55F you will want to winter your plant indoors.
Humidity: If grown indoors, this plant would do well in more humid areas like the kitchen or bathroom. You can always add humidity with a humidifier or by misting.
Feeding: You can fertilize you variegated ginger plant once a month during spring and summer seasons.
Bonus
If you notice brown tips on the ends of the leaves, your plant may be receiving too much sun, especially if it is currently in a full sun situation. Try providing some shade in the afternoon.
