Canna Lily Plant Care Guide

There is so much to love about Canna Lilies! From their colorful, large foliage leaves to their tall colorful bulbs these flowering beauties are an excellent tropical plant choice! Read on to learn how to care for your Canna Lily plant!

Why People Love Canna Lilies

When not in bloom, they sport gorgeous foliage and when in bloom, they bloom a flower that is comparable to that of an iris flower and ever so stunning. There are quite a few varieties and colors of Cannas out there, just here at Tropical Plants of Florida we offer four colors: peach, pink, red, and yellow! Canna plants really stand out in group plantings or when planted as a border!

Your Guide to Canna Lily Care

Care: Easy, low maintenance plant!

Light: Canna Lilies prefer full sun as they love the heat and hot weather (really, they will thrive in July and August even). They will tolerate partial shade, but aim for at least 4 hours of direct sunlight. As always, if you live in a location that experiences extreme heat, avoid sun during the heat of the day. This plant can tolerate high temperatures, but will still burn in extremes.

Water: Water once or twice a week. Cannas prefer to stay on the wet side, however they do not like soggy soil. Aim for uniform moisture and for soil to stay moist rather than fully drying out between waterings. Be weary as too much water can always lead to root rot.

Temperature: When planting your Canna plant outside make sure the ground temperature is at least 60F. Once planted, these Lilies will do well in temperatures up to 90F, as they love heat! Make sure to bring them inside when temperatures drop as they do not like cold or frost.

Humidity: Cannas are tropical plants, and hence, thrive with humidity. If you live in a dry area, we recommend raising the humidity.

Feeding: Canna Lilies are hungry plants! You can feed your lilies once a month starting in early spring.

Bonus

Canna plants are typically grown as annuals, however they can come back under the right conditions! Hardiness zones 8 and warmer can leave their Canna Lilies in the ground, while zone 7 is very hit or miss. If you’re in zones 6 or colder that’s when you will have to dig up your Canna Lily plant and care for it indoors to keep it alive for the following year.
