Hibiscus Plant Care Guide

An icon of the tropics and the plant in our logo, let’s talk about hibiscus plant care! We grow over ten varieties of hibiscus in all forms!

Why People Love This Plant

Who doesn’t love a reminder of their tropical vacation? The hibiscus flower has its ways of magically taking you back.  Its flowers come in so many different colors! You can choose from colors like dark, light, or hot pink, orange, red, peach, yellow, and some varieties have a double flower as well! Pluck a flower and stick it behind your ear and you’ll be transported to an imaginary beach in no time.

Your Guide to Care

Care: Medium. The colder your climate, the more difficult the care.

Light: Hibiscus plants love light and sunshine. If you aren’t in a tropical location, this could be an issue. Over winter, bring your hibiscus plant inside and if available place it by a south facing window for maximum sunlight. You may need to move it away from the window during the heat of the day as spring approaches. However lots of light is needed for good blooms.

Water: Water your hibiscus plant a lot over spring and summer (while it’s growing). This means as soon as you feel your plant is dry to the touch. Be cautious not to drown your plant as hibiscus do not like wet feet, so make sure you provide it with good drainage as well. Over fall and winter you can water less frequently, allowing the top two inches or so to dry out before watering again.

Temperature: 60 to 85 F is considered ideal for hibiscus plants. Make sure to bring your plant inside if you are experiencing temperatures 55 F or below. It only takes a few exposures to low temperatures to kill hibiscus plants.

Humidity: Hibiscus plants, of course, LOVE humidity. They thrive in the tropics and will produce better flowers with higher humidity. Dry air can actually cause buds to drop and leaves to yellow.

Feeding: Hibiscus plants are hungry! You can fertilize your plant once every two weeks during spring and summer. Reduce food amount, and fertilize monthly during fall and winter.

Bonus

If growing indoors, make sure to not overwater but to provide lots of light and humidity to your hibiscus! You can mist your hibiscus plant daily!
